چکیده

The aim of the present experiment was to investigate the acoustic phonetic cues that could underlie a post-stress voicing distinction which, when considered on a segmental basis, appears to be neutralised. The data concern the difference in German between minimal pairs such as 'Enten' and 'enden' which in more casual speaking styles appear to show schwa and oral stop deletion and a surface realisation as a neutralised creaky voice nasal. We extracted from the Kiel Corpus all such contrasts that were judged by trained transcribers to have been neutralised in this way. We measured the spectral slope over the first two harmonics and the time at which the spectral slope first changed significantly. Our results show that, contrary to segmentallybased assumptions, /t, d/ were distinguished depending on the onset time of creaky voice relative to the preceding vowel. These data are consistent with a model in which cues to segmental contrasts may be distributed non-segmentally in time.

Gender variation in creaky voice and fundamental frequency

The current study examines creaky voice and the fundamental frequency associated with modal and creaky voicing across genders. We analyzed read speech data from five male and five female Midwestern Americans between the ages of 18 and 25. We found that female speakers use creaky voice more often than male speakers in this dialect. Additionally, the male speakers produced a much smaller differen...

Linguistic aspects of voice quality with special reference to Athabaskan

1. Introduction Many languages of the world use differences in voice quality or phonation type to contain linguistic functions. Thus, in certain languages, lexical items are differentiated solely on the basis of differences in voice quality. For example, in Jalapa Mazatec, an Otomanguean language spoken in Mexico (Kirk et al. 1993), the three words /ja! / meaning 'tree', /jaª ! / meaning 'he we...

Effects of information structure, syllable structure, and voicing on nuclear falling pitch accents in German

Previous work showed that tonal alignment distinguishes information status (given/new), that syllable structure affects alignment and that the scaling and alignment of tones correlate with focus. We investigate the interaction of these effects on the tonal realization of nuclear falling accents in German. In a production experiment, syllable structure [± open syllable] and voicing of the follow...

Hmm-based Classification of Glottalization Phenomena in German-accented English

The present paper investigates the automatic detection of word-initial glottalization phenomena (glottal stops and creaky voice) in German-accented English by means of HMMs. Glottalization of word-initial vowels can be very frequent in German-accented English, as well as in German. Detection and classification of glottalization phenomena is useful in order to obtain a pre-segmentation of speech...

Acoustic Differences Between English /t/ Glottalization and Phrasal Creak

In American English, the presence of creaky voice can derive from distinct linguistic processes, including phrasal creak (prolonged irregular voicing, often at edges of prosodic phrases) and coda /t/ glottalization (when the alveolar closure for syllablefinal /t/ is replaced by or produced simultaneously with glottal constriction). Previous work has shown that listeners can differentiate words ...
